Wall to Wall Carpet or Laminate?

Q: We have a small ranch house. The living room is L-shaped to accommodate a small dining area. Recently, we decided to get rid of the carpet and go with the hardwood floors underneath. To our despair, there was no hardwood flooring under the carpet in the dining area, just some old kitchen tile. Dupont Block Laminate FlooringWe are beginning to see more and more engineered wood. It is sold is many different varieties including hand scraped engineered wood. It is beautiful. It is normally more expensive than laminate floors.

Here is the difference between Laminate (Pergo, Dupont, Armstrong and other brands) and Engineered wood.

Laminate: A man made material that has the appearance of wood, but is really a plastic. The finish is like a Formica counter top, but more durable and thicker.

Engineered wood. This is a plywood type of material that has a pre-finished layer that is real wood. The finish is factory applied and is much more durable that any on-site applied finishes.
